ENERGY EFFICIENCY FEATURES TO CONSIDER
Windows are thermal holes. An average home may lose 30% of its heat or air-conditioning energy through its windows. Energy-efficient windows save money each and every month. There are even some cases where new windows can be net energy gainers. The payback period for selecting energy-efficient units ranges from two years to ten years. In new construction, their higher initial cost can be offset because you'll probably need a smaller, less expensive heating and cooling system. And more-durable windows may cost less in the long haul because of lowered maintenance and replacement costs. Plus, you'll be more comfortable the whole while you live with them.
- Low-Emissivity (Low-e) glass — a specially coated glass with high visible light transmission and low emittance materials to lower the total heat flow through the window.
In summer, Low-e glass allows visible sunlight in while blocking 96% of the sun's infrared heat energy. In winter, Low-e glass reflects radiant heat originating from indoors back into the room keeping your home warmer. As an extra benefit, Low-e glass also selectively filters out 86% of the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays, providing protection against the fading of furniture, fabrics and carpeting while keeping your home cooler inside during the summer months.
- Argon gas — this natural, existing gas is colorless, odorless, non-toxic, non-corrosive and non-flammable and it has a thermal conductivity 30% lower than that of air. Together with Low-e coating, it delivers a 51% improvement in U-values and a 104% improvement in R-values as compared to typical air-filled insulating glass without Low-e glass.
